This week has been BUSY! Let just say we are all very ready for the weekend. I think the last time a wrote anything was Monday. Not all that much has happened except for classes. We did have a huger thunderstorm one day! The sad part was that I was stuck in class. I could hear the torrential downpour and the thunder but was unable to actually look outside... It was some well needed rain but really didn't do anything to fix our water problem:P On that note, I still have been very lucky. My house has only ever lost water one night! Ive started to stockpile water in the event that it does happen however. As for classes, the level of intensity has picked up. We are studying some very difficult areas of the body which is driving us all crazy. For me anyways, I leave anatomy class understanding very little and use the lab to do all my learning. In class we typically talk about the body system we are going to examine right before we examine them. I am much more of a hands on learner with anatomy so I find the lab portion way more helpful. I make sure I stay to the very end of the lab because its normally not until the last 15 minutes that everything comes together and I finally understand how everything works. This week we have been focusing on the brachial plexus and arm. The extent to which we have to understand these structures is insane. For the Brachial plexus its pretty much like trying to look at a bowl of spaghetti and being able to identify each noodle (nerve). Not only that but being able to understand where it comes from, where it goes, what it does to each muscle, what happens if it gets damages etc. Human anatomy is also not the same between everyone. There are variations with everything so we need to be able to generalize the structures to every other body in the room as well. So anatomy has been taking up a fair bit of my time this week and has forced me to take some time away from studying for other classes. But alas, the weekend is nearly upon us and we can get everything sorted out then:)
The island still remains the same in my mind from the last time I talked about it. This week I have left the university or my house just once.. I think tomorrow night a few of us might go down to the "strip" and hangout out for a bit. The university and pretty much everything else on the island is closed Saturday for St. Kitts independence day. Its a bit of a bummer because I won't be able to study at school. I will have to try to be productive at Home.
This week I have also been able to attend a few TA review sessions. I thought they were great. The TA's are students who did really well in the course so they know exactly what the high yield concepts are. I am going to be going to these as much as possible. Its not for everyone however. Some people who get stressed when they deviate from their study routines might find them not so great. What I suggest is take one hour out of your day and check them out. Decide for yourself if they are worth attending. So thats really all I have to add.. Ill let you know how the weekend goes.
Things I learned over the past few days
-I wish I had a way to play the piano here.. Just couldn't fit that in my suitcase..
-There is no Apple certified anyone on St. Kitts. So if something happens to your mac while its under apple care you have to send it back home... (roommate experience). The school has a loan program where they will give you a computer, but it is more for a short term basis. You do everything on a computer so make sure you have thought about an alternative if something happens. If you have a PC there is more flexibility on the island.
-The nearest McDonalds is on Saint Martin island. I could use a late night mcflurry right about now.
-The last day of anatomy lab before blocks we have a mock anatomy exam! (awesome)
-Putting a heavier sheet on my bed has makes me sleep much better even though I'm quite warm without it. Not sure what to make of that..
-Every day this week I have been getting more and more tired throughout the day. I need to sleep in one of these days..
-My tupperware isn't really high quality. I dropped a whole meal on the floor and had to clean it up. 2 minutes later I did it again...
-I've been finding that a lot of Kittitians say "you alright?" instead of the "how are you" that Im used to. It's always asked as a questions and I always think that I must look sad or something until I remember its just what they say... Anyways I should go to bed.
Good vibes all
Cheers,
Mike
