Happy Sunday everyone:)
Just finished up my first week here on the island. It feels good to be back, but we are already starting to ramp things up here. I was happy that the whole weekend wasn't consumed by studies, but from this point on I don't think I will be so lucky. So far I am enjoying al my classes. My favourite class at the moment would have to be Neuroscience. The material is super interesting and the prof is great at well. Next on the rank list would be microbiology for very similar reasons. The course material is relevant and exciting, and the professor is also super. Behavioural and Path1 are just okay right now. The material isn't that exciting and I haven't figured out yet how Im going to study for them. This weekend I tried a bunch of things, but I think I will have to approach Path similar to Biochemistry last semester, which unfortunately means a lot of transcribing notes and burning through paper. Gotta do what you gotta do. I think the course should get more interesting as the semester moves forward.
The other half of my week went to the SGA (student government). We had a meeting almost every day last week. We met with the president of the university, met with the trustees of the university, and had some internal meeting as well. I am really enjoying being part of the SGA again this semester even though it is fairly time consuming. Part of that is because we still need to hold elections for a few more positions, so hopefully the work load will decrease a bit. We had our welcome back party for the students last night on the strip. It is run by the SGA so I was fairly involved with that for most of the night, and unfortunately had to stay to the bitter end. It was a good night however. Friday night I met up with some friends, and tonight I am going to go to the movies I think. My original plan was to do some snorkelling, but the ocean was a bit rough today which makes the visibility pretty poor, so instead I got to study all day:)
The island is doing well from what I can see. They are still having water issues, but that might resolve here in the next few months with the rainy season coming. Over the break there was also quite a bit of construction to the roads and what not. For the last 2 semesters they have been working on a tunnel in order to avoid a rather steep and dangerous corner up in the mountains and they finally completed that. They also did some bridge construction on the rout that I take to Frigate, which is now a bit of a pain because there is a detour while they finish the road which takes you down the strip. It adds about 10 minutes to the trip which is not so much fun. That should be fixed in the next week hopefully. Weather has also been nice. Sunny and windy which makes the days bearable. As summer approaches things are going to get pretty toasty around here. Will take some adjusting again..
Well that about all I have for now. Ill be back to write some more shortly!
Things I've learned
-The island has tried to put those digital speed radars that show you your speed and flash when you go too fast, but Ive learned that kittitians use this as a tool to see how fast their cars can go.
-There seems to be a larger police presence since I've been back, but I don't know what the police actually do. Ive never seen someone get pulled over, ever. Ive seen 1 person get a parking ticket, and Ive scene the military show up to random events and locations around the island and stand around for a bit before leaving. Im sure they are doing things but I just don't see it. I guess thats a good thing
-I learned of a place called the food court in town that apparently is group of food truck type resturants that have great food. I will have to check it out.
-Scalpels work really well to tighten those tiny screws on the back of your laptop
Cheers,
Mike
