I write to you tonight from the eastern lab, where I sit all alone studying biochemistry on a Friday night. This is weekend two of our third block. That means that there is a biochemistry quiz Monday and I now have to make Biochemistry my priority for the next day or two. The material up to this point hasn't been too bad, so I'm hoping it goes well.
What has happened in the past week or so? Well first week back was a little lazy on my end. I could have worked a little harder then I did, but I still manages to keep on top of thins which was good. Last weekend we had Sunfest, which is an event we have every semester during the first weekend of block 3. This was also the event I did not attend last semester. I was semi forced to go this semester because I needed to work for the SGA, as it was an SGA hosted event. I say I was semi forced because I would have gone anyways:P It was a fun day. All the students who want to go are shuttled to a reggae beach where we are given free food, free tubing, paddle boarding, you can rent a jet ski whatever. Things you typically do on a beach you do for the day. The weather started off scary, but learned up as soon as we hit the beach. I has my fill of sand and sun by about 3 o'clock and decided to grab the fist bus back to home. I then studied for the rest of the evening. Sunday was a typical study day.
This past week, there want anything really important to note except today where we had another simulator situation for physic lab. This week we were helping a person with an acute episode of respiratory distress. We had to access the patient, look at his history, order X-rays, ABG reports, etc in order to figure out what we want to do. We determined he was had developed respiratory acidosis as interpreted from arterial blood gas analysis, depressed diaphragm in chest Xray, his presentation as a patient and spirometry test results. His vitals matched the diagnosis and we treated his as a COPD patient who has an acute attack due to some infection. We administered Nebulized Albuterol and Ipatroprium with hopes to lower his PaCO2 levels and get his O2 states back to normal. We then decided on a course of antibiotics which I had no idea about because all the other people in my group have taken microbiology and I have yet to. That is next semester for me. It was a good simulation. I got to solidify a few concepts in my mind and we got to play with the dummies some more:) Afterwards we worked with some Spirometry machines and practiced diagnosing respiratory conditions for the generated data. It was a good day in the lab.
This evening I am studying. Most people are as well, but the odd few took the night off which I completely understand. The next two days will be pretty much the same. Hope to get a room with an ocean view and enjoy studying for two days.
Tomorrow there is a HOLI celebration (Festival of colours). If you guys don't know what that is, by the name, its the Hindu celebration where you celebrate the approach of the vernal equinox by throwing a bunch of coloured power and water at each other. Essentially. The hindu student associated has invited everyone to join them in some fun and food tomorrow afternoon in the field at school. So if I decide I want to be colourful while I study, I might wear a white shirt and join them! We shall see.
I also got more visitors this week! My second family (neighbours) from back home payed a visit as they were sailing through on a cruise. I was able to meet them downtown in the morning, show them around the school and my house. It was nice to see some familiar Canadian faces again:) I also got a delivery from home which included easter candy! Yahoo!! Thanks for the visit will see you guys in a few weeks!
Thats all the news I have for you right now. Talk soon!
Things I've learned this past week
-At this stage in game, my weapon of choice is a Pen. I am mastering the art of pen to paper combat.
-They released the exam schedule for block three and people are not happy. So we will see what comes of that.
-I have a form I was supposed to pick up Monday. It is Friday night. Opps
-I need to get moving on the new roommate hunt.
-I spotted a plastic fetus randomly placed on a desk in one of the classrooms on Monday. Its survived a whole week without anyone moving it as it is still there.
-I almost got caught in a downpour the other day. I have always been really lucky and never really been stuck in the rain while walking. (Except once when my parents were here last semester).. I was walking to the grocery store when it started to sprinkle. It then got heavier and thankfully I was walking with another Canadian (which means he can walk fast) and we picked up the pace and made it just in time for the downpour to never happen... But it was a close one.
-I managed to catch up on suits. I replaced my random youtube surfing before bed into finishing the season.
-It is not time for me to be kicked of campus as 11pm approaches. I wasnt sure what I wasted to study for the last half hour of the night but craftily used my time to write this. It was the best excuse to not study;)
Cheers,
Mike
