Well the adventure starts here! Today I found out I was accepted into the University of Medicine and Health Science (UMHS) on the island of St. Kitts! The email I received this morning was met with an initial feeling of excitement followed soon after by equal parts anxiety and nervousness. I can't say that when I first set out on the path of becoming a doctor that UMHS was where I indented to be, but I am extremely happy that the stars aligned to have gotten me to where I am right now. I try to write this first post with a thousand thoughts running through my head, the biggest one at this exact moment being how Im going to get out of my telus phone contract... This is however the least of my worries.
The first post is the hardest. At least I think so. It's the first one after all! The one I'm going to look back to in a few years time and see how far I've come from this very moment. I will be reading this post and laughing at how little I knew, how much I have learned, and how everything I have done has aided in my journey in one way or another. But why go to the trouble? I have decided to document my journey for a number of reasons. First and foremost for my family and friends. For me, my whole life has been in Ottawa where saying goodbye has never really been necessary, as the ones I care about have always been close by. When the day comes for me to leave, this will be a way for family and friends to tune in and catch up with the things I've been doing whenever they want. Second, I am doing this for the future med students out there. For me, my decision to attend UMHS is honestly a result of the stories and experiences I was able to read and in some cases pry from UMHS students. Blogs such as these were a huge component! Last but not least, I am keeping this blog for my future self. I think being able to look back at all the big moments as well as the little moments I'm bound to forget will be well worth it. If nothing else, in 10 years I will look back and laugh at how I was only successful at keeping this blog going for a few months.. (Hopefully not the case). If all works out, I will keep this blog going through my whole UMHS expedition and beyond, giving a Canadians perspective on the school and its ability to get me to where I dream to be.
More about why I chose UMHS later
Cheers,
Mike
