Im happy an slightly worried to report that we are almost 1/4 the way through the semester! Next week marks one month into the semester. Hard to believe. Since last week I've pretty much been keeping to my regular routine. Which really is just going to class and studying. Last week at school we got a bunch more info. If I could take a block exam on the info we have received so far, things might be okay. unfortunately we have a whole extra week worth of material to know before blocks.
My favourite class last week was Physiology 1st and Biochemistry 2nd. We are in cardiophysiology right now which to me it fascinating. Way more difficult then I expected, but I learn so much in class that it actually has been one of the classes I have to worry about the least! This is real medicine knowledge that we are getting. Things we will 100% have to understand and be able to apply in rotations. So pressure is on to know it well, but it is interesting enough that I don't have an issue with that. Biochem was also pretty good. My favourite part was probably learning about the different enzymes and how to detect MI's (Heart attacks) and what not. Also we have been learning some haematology which also has some pretty cool real world applications. We are starting to get into disease in genetics, finally, which means it is becoming more interesting. as for immunology, I don't like studying it too much, but I think it is fascinating what our bodies are capable of doing in order to protect us. Very interesting. Epidemiology is something I'm worried about right now. It happens that our exam for this class is held a week before blocks. This means that in two days I have my first Epi exam. So most of my time this weekend is going towards studying for Epi unfortunately.
Med 2 so far hasn't been as big and bad as I thought. I think I have been much better with my time this semester and am studying a bit more efficiently. Im not feeling too overwhelmed yet, but I know the moment will come. Last week there was one or two days that I simply ran out of time in the day, but I was able to make up for it thankfully. Most people who started the semester in Med 2 have stuck with it thus far except for a few. I think the general reason is that they use want more time to study for their other courses. Perfectly fair.
In term of out of school stuff, last weekend I went to a movie and today I went for a jungle hike. At UMHS there is a hiking group led by one of our professors. So today there was an organized waterfall hike. I was up at 6am to do it, but it meant I still had the day to study afterwards. I was saddened to see that the so called "waterfall" which is the pot of gold at the end go the hike was actually just a rock wall. Since the droughts and what not there was very little water to be falling... Maybe next time. The hike was amazing though. Ill be sure to post some pictures when I get a chance. Thats really all I have to add! Thanks for reading:)
Things I learned this week
- Buying a crockpot it always a good thing. I bought one, and it makes good food.
-Even when there is no water on a waterfall hike, it doesn't mean the ground isn't going to be super muddy and wet. Not sure how that happens..
-I think investing in a cow or two would be a good idea at this point based on the amount of milk consumed in our house.
-If you eat 20 raw eggs a day you will get a Biotin deficiency
-In Brazil ferns are called samambaia
-They sell ice-cream at school now
-The guy who sells food across the road hasn't come back this semester yet...
